Abstract

In the Viennese tradition of ethnohistory, the critical interpretation of sources or "Quellenkritik" is an important methodological concern. This paper illustrates how fieldwork may contribute to the interpretation of written sources. The Ayt Hdiddu, a Berber tribe of the Moroccan High Atlas, were almost totally inaccessible until well into the 20th century. The rare precolonial written references to them therefore tend to contain hearsay evidence from neighbouring tribal groups. Here, two sources of this kind are discussed. Knowledge of the way tribal groups are seen by their neighbours reveals certain typical distortions and is therefore instrumental in the assessment and interpretation of sources of this kind.
